I read this book multiple time because it was so good.

Not Your All-American Girl follows 12-year-old Tara Horowitz, a half Jewish, half Chinese 7th grader at Dwight D. Eisenhower Junior High who auditions for a play and watches her best friend get the lead part she deserved because her theater teacher says she doesn't look 'American' enough. Tara is determined to skake things up in the play and give others who are shoved out of the spotlight a chance - but how? This novel, set in 1984, gives a powerful message about standing up for yourself when others don't, and others of friendship, the importance of family, and button making.
