Shield of the Maccabees book review: this was a graphic (cartoon drawing) novel, a fictional portrayal of the Maccabees beating the Seleucid (Greek) army in Jerusalem. I thought it was good the two boys became friends and protected each other despite being on opposite sides. They remained friends instead of becoming enemies. It was interesting they stood up for each other. Also he went to learn at the Greek philosophy lesson/school, but the Greek boy didn’t learn any Torah. Perhaps if he did he wouldn’t have fought his friend. I was real glad to see HaShem, the Torah, Temple and Judaism defended!! Still, it was action packed and exciting! I think it might be more appealing to boys.
I liked this book because Jason and Johnathan become friends even though Jason's Greek and Johnathan is Jewish.
The book is really nice. I loved that it was built like a comic, I loved the parts of the battle. I learned from the book how the Greeks fought against the Jews at that time. I recommend the book and think it is suitable for children in third grade and up. Nevo
I think this book is amazing so much to learn about in a graphic novel purrfect pair. :3
I like this book because I think Greeks and Jews should be friends.
