Over the summer, I read this book with my family. It had an unexpected twist about her childhood. We all enjoyed this exciting story!
I loved reading this book!
This book could have been really great, except for a couple of things. On the mild side, it assumes a girl would have had a bat mitzvah at 13, in the forties. That is a more recent change, as traditionally a girl was considered a bat mitzvah at 12. Bigger objections include comments about Jews just keeping up appearances and secretly breaking Shabbat, which feeds into antisemitic tropes and stereotypes about Jews. (Yes, Jews as hypocrites being a trope.) It also has a character trying to look the part of a Shabbat observant Jew to get her friend's mom to give permission for him to come to her apartment so he can secretly listen to the radio, as he cannot do so at home because it is Shabbat.
this book was so good! I read it two times already, and i love it so much!
