Mrs. Kaputnik's Pool Hall and Matzo Ball Emporium

Review by rhp

This book is an amazing book about a little girl and her brother, who live with their mother. Their father has gone to America, and everyone else in the village seems to think that their father will not send for them. But is all hope lost? Read Mrs. Kaputnik's Pool Hall and Matzo Ball Emporium to find out all about Shoshe and Moshe and their great adventures with Snigger, their pet dragon. I really recommend this book for really anybody!

This book was slow and unexciting. It didn't grab my attention.

Stick to your plan and you will definitely succeed!

Reviewed by Annabel, 9, IL Design Team Shoshi and Moshe Kaputnik are the main characters in this fantasy novel. They are little kids who live in Russia. They have a pet dragon, Snigger. They and their mother move to America in search of their father. He had left them five years ago to find a job, promising to come back and bring them to America with him. He never came back. It is July when they get there. They land on Ellis Island. A few important things happen on their journey: They find a place for Snigger to hide, so they can get through Ellis Island. More exciting things occur, but you need to read the book to find out! The Kaputnik’s move in with their uncle, aunt, and cousin in New York City. However, when their money is stolen by their relatives, Shoshi, Moshe and their mother have to run the family restaurant. Over the course of the story, Shoshi grows into a nicer, smarter girl. Moshe becomes tougher and stronger. I liked how the siblings never fought, and I liked how when the children and their father were reunited they went straight to asking what he was doing while they were away. I learned that if you stick to your plan the whole way, and you work hard while doing it, you will definitely succeed.

A Dragon?

Review by mmore

in this book, Shoshi and Moshi, who for some reason have rhyming names, move to america. That is where their father ''left" them. There they meet the most magical thing of all: a dragon! will they find their father? will they be able to survive in america? will they be able to keep the dragon forever? Read the book to find out!

This is the best immigration story I have ever read!

Review by Design Team

It is mostly realistic, but with a touch of fantasy. The main characters are Shoshi, a Russian girl who almost gets kidnapped by Cossacks; Moshe, Shoshi’s brother, who is almost always at Shoshi’s side; and Snigger, a fire- breathing dragon who beats up Cossacks. Supporting characters include Mrs. Kaputnik, who is Shoshi and Moshe’s mother and who owns the emporium; Aloysius P. Thornswaddle, the owner of a local baseball team; and Nick the Stick, a gangster who rules the Lower East Side with a rod of iron. The part that grabbed me was the mix of realism and fantasy. There is funny humor and serious humor, fiction and nonfiction. (Serious humor happens when the situation is serious but people make jokes anyway.) The combinations are what make this a good read. I give this book four stars!
