The Secret Diary of Captain Carrot by Hadar

 

Inspired by The Kindness Club: Chloe on the Bright Side, National Design Team member Hadar shows us life according to Captain Carrot (Chloe’s pet bunny). Note: Spoilers ahead!

Introduction

Hello. My name is Captain Carrot and this is my diary. I am mostly writing about what my owner, Chloe, tells me. She tells me a lot of her secrets. I’m sure it’s because my ears are so long. I enjoy hopping around, doing (or listening to) exciting things, and eating carrots. I live in a cage in Chloe’s room. Oh, and by the way, this diary is a COMPLETE SECRET. Do not tell anyone else about it after reading!

Dear Diary,

Today Chloe is not at home. She was at this thing she has to go to because school’s starting soon. I guess she’s supposed to meet her new teachers and see her classroom. She told me she traded pencil boxes (I don’t exactly know what that is) with this girl named Lucy. She also told me she gave a girl named Monroe a back scratch (I wish she was doing that to me) and became her friend. She told me all of this right before she went to the mall, where she is right now. I’ll tell you more things later!

Dear Diary,

AGAIN today Chloe is not at home. She is at her dad’s house. Her parents divorced (Chloe told me that) and even though I don’t know what that means, I know you understand everything. Right now, I am also looking out the window next to me. I am also chewing my toy carrot. Oh! Chloe’s coming back. I’d better hide you. Gotta go! Hoppity Hoppity Hop!

Dear Diary,

Today Chloe started school in 5^th grade. I saw her begging for a French braid this morning. I don’t know why she cares about fashion! She told me she got accepted to try out for the “It Girls” club. I don’t know what that is! She said the head of it is her new friend Monroe. I’m glad I’ve heard such interesting news. She also said she’s forced to work with kids named Lucy and Theo. I hope it goes OK!

Chloe had school again today. She said it’s actually nice working with Lucy & Theo. They decided to do kind things for mean people to try to make them kinder. She came home a bit late today because they were at Theo’s house. She told me she found out I’ve got a 3^rd eyelid. I’ve known that all my life! Need to go!

Dear Diary,

Today was a really great day. (Chloe uses the expression “awesome,” but I don’t know what that means.) After Chloe FINALLY came back from school, she had three friends with her: Monroe, Anjali, and Rachael. She introduced them to me, and then they ate pizza (Chloe and Monroe’s with mushrooms) and danced to music! I even hopped with them and found their pizza leftovers. Yum!

Dear Diary,

Chloe could not give me even a little back scratch today!! She was out with Monroe. They went to the mall and bought new clothes. I hate how Chloe started caring so much about fashion! Anyway, later she talked to Lucy and Theo. They said they tried to clean their mean neighbor’s garden! It failed. But I knew all this before Chloe because I saw through the window!

Dear Diary,

Chloe was having trouble with her friends today. Lucy gave Theo & Chloe a small badge that says “The Kindness Club.” Monroe found it and got angry, but they sorted things out again. But Monroe said Chloe has to give back the badge, because if Chloe’s joining her club, she doesn’t want her to have it. I wonder what Chloe will do?! It makes me very upset. I’m also upset because I only was fed two carrots today! I hope things get hoppier.

Dear Diary,

A lot of exciting things have been happening in the past few days. I am so HOPPY!! As you know from my last entry, Chloe was supposed to give Lucy the badge. But when Monroe was looking, she only pretended to give her the badge. Unfortunately, Monroe found out. She wasn’t hoppy. Later, she said that if Chloe wanted to be in the club, she had to be with Monroe that moment. Monroe also said she couldn’t be a part of the kindness club. Chloe said she wants to do both. Monroe said no. Chloe then decided not to be part of the “It Girls” club. Monroe stomped away. But now she’s with friends, and she is hoppy. And I’m hoppy too.
