        What the Book Is About
Just in time for Passover, this entertaining graphic novel presents an adaptation of the biblical story of the Israelite escape from enslavement in Egypt. Kids will be engaged as they enjoy exciting cartoons depicting Joseph’s rise to second-in-command in Egypt, the Ten Plagues, and the splitting of the Red Sea. This book covers slavery, freedom, and everything in between.

This is a graphic novel rendition of the Passover story. It’s based on the book of Shemot (Exodus) and includes midrash (rabbinical interpretation of the text) as part of the story.

While describing the Jews’ difficult life as slaves under Pharoah, the author notes that men were assigned women’s jobs (laundry) and women were forced to do men’s jobs (carrying heavy stones) to create despair among the enslaved Israelite people. It’s important kids realize that this reflects gender distinctions from that time and are not reflective of how we view employment and gender today. The destruction caused by the Ten Plagues, including death of the first born, are illustrated in a comical and cartoonish way.
