Why We Chose This Book - When the Hurricane Came

What is it like to wake up one morning and find out you have to leave your home immediately? Unfortunately, with Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, many families had to evacuate their homes and  parents had to explain to their kids why they were leaving and the possibility that they would not see their home again.
 
In When the Hurricane Came, 9 year-old Gertie has to leave her beloved New Orleans on the eve of Hurricane Katrina. She describes her fear at not knowing when her dad will join her family in safety in Memphis, her anxiety over starting a new school and making new friends, and the pressure of having to choose what she will bring with her. Most importantly for families reading this book, Gertie gives voice to the real fears faced by a young child experiencing evacuation along with the ingenuity and creativity for facing those fears and finding ways for kids to contribute and help other kids affected by these hurricanes.
