This book made me think more about being Jewish.

The cover looks babyish but the book was really interesting. I learned more about history in NY, being a Jewish immigrant at that time and what it was like to be Black. I wanted it to continue.

I loved this book!

This book made me think more about friendship.

This story tells you about how life can be hard & not everything good will come to you, But friends can help you get through all the hard parts. It was depressing to learn about the racism of Nazi's vs. Jews, Americans vs. Immigrants, Whites vs. Blacks. It just broke my heart to learn about that.

Super good!!!!!

This book made me think more about friendship.

This book was probably my favorite book yet! I liked this book so much because it was historical fiction. I would recommend this book to others who like the topic about immigration to America. Someone who might like this book is someone who has a family member who has immigrated to America. The reason for this is because Gustave the main character is a Jewish immigrant in America. In this book the lesson was to always persevere through things. One of the things Gustave had to persevere through Is trying to fit in in school because of his clothes.

A book that changes history

This book made me think more about friendship.

This book talked about a boy that moved to the US. He expected it to be a land of freedom and opportunity. He thought everyone was free to live up to their own potential. But he found out that not everyone is treated equally.

This is one of my favorite books of all time. It is most likely the best book offered by PJ Our Way.

It's very easy to take everything we have for granted (including knowledge of social norms). After reading this book, about an immigrant who doesn't know if his friend is alive or not, has next to nothing, and doesn't know what "normal" people do, I though more about my life in general.
Don't get me wrong, though. While this book was certainly thought-provoking in many, many ways, it is also upbeat and happy, mysterious and factual, and so much more!
Please read this book! I'm sure you would enjoy it as much as I did!

A Very Good Book

I loved this book!

I like this book because it shows me how unfair it was for some people when the story takes place. It makes me think about how hard it is to be in a whole new country. I would recommend this book to someone who thinks about things that are unfair

I really like this book. I have been waiting for it for a really long time, because it is a continuation of the book, Black Radishes. I don't think it was as exciting as the first book, but I still like it a lot!

I learned more about Jewish history from this book.

Such a good book that taught me about history and prejudices in every country. It was interesting to learn about racism and prejudices from the perspective of a Jew who fled the Nazis during that time. I liked it so much, we read the other book about Gustave's life in France before he came to America. Don't be fooled by the cover!

When I read this book, I was sad to remember that the Americans were like this before. I liked that Gustave decided to step up to September Rose and be friends with her even though she was a" Negro". Calling them Negroes were like how people called them back in France.

Thumbs up!

An amazing book, peppered with French
phrases. It really teaches you about the feelings of WWII-era ideas about segregation. The only part that bothers me is that Gustave is not even in upstate New York, and it is only stated that he is "skating with the statue of liberty" at the end of the book, and is in fact just skating in a quickly-built skating rink. Overall, it is a very good book, going in-depth about each character's family, friends and feelings, and even as far to the background of the immigrant main character. The book teaches some French, a lot of historical ideas, and still remains to be a very fun-to-read book.

Totally recommended(tho i would not recommend ages11 and under)
if you read this book and want to know more of what happened back
in France i suggest black radishes a book telling about his adventures
in France(pre skating with the statue of liberty) The plot was very good
and i like the fact that he stuck by Seppie even tho his parents and
Seppies older brother didn't acxactly agree with it, It was all resolved
in the end tho and overall it was a very good book.

I felt like I have a lot of connections with the main character, Gustave and was able to identify with him. It felt like I was with him during the whole story: I felt his fear, his joy, and his pain.

Susan Lynn Meyer

Author of Black Radishes and Skating with the Statue of Liberty

“I was always fascinated, as a child, by the glimpses my father's stories gave me of what then seemed a faraway culture and time." – Susan Lynn Meyer

Susan Lynn Meyer grew up in Baltimore and loved reading. She also loved climbing trees, swimming, gymnastics and hearing her father tell stories about his French childhood.

One thing she hated as a kid and STILL doesn’t like are lima beans!

Susan loves cats too! Susan’s cat, Molly, makes an appearance in her second novel, Skating with the Statue of Liberty, the sequel to Black Radishes. Here’s a question she’d like you to think about: “What funny thing does your pet do? Would you like to write a story where your pet appears? And if you don’t have a pet, remember – this is fiction! You can invent one!”
