What the Book Is About

Milla and her best friend Honey attend the same synagogue, but they go to different Orthodox schools. When confident Honey transfers to less-assertive Milla’s school for sixth grade, both girls are initially excited, but their close friendship ends up facing some tough challenges. The slice-of-life story follows the friends and their families through the school year and the holidays of the Jewish calendar; important milestones include bat mitzvah preparation and sitting shiva for a beloved teacher. The novel is long but entirely engrossing in its nuanced, often humorous look at both middle-school friendship and modern Orthodox life.

Jewish Content & Values

  • This thoroughly Jewish story revolves around two girls’ everyday lives in their close-knit, modern Orthodox community.

  • Chapters are arranged in sections by Jewish holidays and other observances, and the book includes an abundance of Hebrew and Yiddish words (and an extensive glossary and guide to Jewish holidays).

  • Characters mention Jewish values such as mitzvahs (good deeds) and chesed (loving kindness).

Content Advisory

A beloved teacher’s death comes as a shock in an otherwise light novel but is a powerful part of the story.
